Similarly, when it comes to touch and other physical connections, make sure you and your date are on the same page about what feels ‘right’. If you ultimately decide to meet in person, make sure that you follow the necessary COVID precautions. Ask your date what precautions he or she is taking and whether they have been exposed to the virus to make sure you feel comfortable meeting in person. Remember that all information you put out on the internet will live there forever!
They are visual learners
The study also noted that, on average, autistic adolescents and young adults had less knowledge of sex and privacy. This meant they were more likely to engage in inappropriate sexual behaviors. They may be trying to tell you they are tired, frustrated or hungry. The normal everyday hustle and bustle can be overwhelming to our loved ones with autism. Normal senses like sight, sound, and taste can be jarring, frightening and painful. It is impossible to avoid all outside stimuli but understanding the discomfort they go through is a huge first step to loving someone with the condition. From initial speech delays in their early developmental years to speech impairments as they progress, it can be hard to communicate with someone who is autistic.
This can start at home with families talking about how to treat a family member and how those relationships affect each other. Individuals with high functioning autism may be interested in online dating or even a double date with a trusted friend. It is important to talk to autistic people about online safety and have a protocol in place to keep them safe. At some point or another in relationships, decisions will need to be made.
If you say it right away/on the first date, they’ll most likely run. If they still run, when they got the chance to know you, they aren’t worth it. Those that have put the time in to understand what Aspergers is, will show compassion, and be patient with you. While life is lonely now, just keep putting yourself out there. Dating/relationships is hard for everyone, not just us. Dating can be a full time job in itself, and is no different than job hunting amongst the thousands of others that are applying for the same jobs.
Autistic people act so not to torture you, but because it is easier for them to understand you and to be on the same wavelength as you. You can benefit your partner if you have clear, calm, and predictable communication. If the person with ASD understands how to meet his or her partner’s needs, they are more likely to be able to meet them. You must explicitly communicate your social, emotional, mental, physical, and sexual needs in order to thrive. Issues such as executive dysfunction, motor skill issues, social differences, sensory overload, and more can make life difficult. Your girlfriend may want comfort, or she may want to be alone.
