Most of all, you deserve to be in a relationship with a partner who respects you. Many people are afraid of what their partner might do if they end the relationship, and in some cases, it may not be safe to leave. Young adults who experience violence in a relationship are more likely to drink heavily, smoke marijuana, develop depression, or experience suicidal tendencies. This isn’t a situation limited to young women; teen boys can also fall prey to an unhealthy—or even abusive—relationship.

Dr. Daphne King is an assistant professor and Master of Social Work online program coordinator in the Social Work Department of George Mason University’s College of Health and Human Service. King is an expert in treating teens and adolescents with self-esteem issues and depression and has facilitated numerous clinical and psychoeducational groups on self-esteem issues for teens. Millions of teens are in abusive relationships, and parents are often the last to know. One such video game that has won the competition previously is Grace’s Diary which puts players in the place of Grace as she grapples with her friend Natalie’s changes. Grace’s Diary has been played by thousands of teens since it was introduced a decade ago and has enjoyed rave reviews.

Instead, help them see why the relationship they’re in is not healthy. Overall, a safety plan is designed to keep your teen as safe as possible while they take steps to end the relationship with the person they are dating. When you first mention the idea of a safety plan to your teen, they may not even realize they’re in an abusive relationship.

Social media has also done a lot of good in terms of awareness and unity. Through hashtags and campaigns, we’ve built communities with youth and allies nationally and internationally. There’s power in social media, conversation, and action, and it’s all the more powerful when it’s led by the voices of youth. We encourage everyone to use their voice in ways that feel comfortable to them—whether it’s a short video, an art display, or a simple repost of something that you see from Break the Cycle or another organization on social media. It’s all about using our voices to create change, calling out the toxic behavior in relationships, and acknowledging the role of building community to end relationship violence. That’s Not Cool is a national public education campaign that uses digital examples of controlling, pressuring, and threatening behavior to raise awareness about and prevent teen dating abuse.

They also may have the same circle of friends and they may participate in the same activities. So, ending a relationship with someone who is abusing them can be a little more complicated because they may not be able to completely sever all ties with the person. A safety plan can be developed anytime in a dating relationship and should be reevaluated regularly as the risk factors in the relationship change or escalate. Marjavi says, if parents spot their teen experiencing what they think could be an unhealthy or even abusive relationship, they need to talk to the teen immediately and express “concern and unwavering love.

For this reason, your teen should always have an extra set of keys in a safe place. Remind them it’s best they don’t share that location with anyone (especially their partner). Letting these authority figures know what your teen is experiencing adds a layer of protection.

Talk with someone who can help, such as your parents, a teacher, a school guidance counselor, a parent of one of your friends, a coach, an advisor, or your employer.
